Christopher Columbus was the first European to discover the Caribbean country of the Dominican Republic on his first voyage in 1492. His son, Diego, was its first viceroy, and its capital, Santo Domingo, became the oldest European settlement in the Western Hemisphere. Columbus’ Spanish benefactors may have been keen on finding gold, but without the benefit of modern exploration technology, all they found was small trinkets made from placer gold – they missed the mother lode.
However, Unigold Inc. [UGD-TSXV] didn’t miss it. The company has been actively exploring its 1,000 square kilometre land position located along the border with Haiti. The Dominican Republic covers the eastern two-thirds of the island of Hispaniola with Haiti covering the western one-third of the island.
